Director of Christian Education
Reports To:

General Summary:
The Christian Education Director is a vital member of our
church staff and congregation.
This individual is responsible
for planning, coordinating and implementing the Christian
Education of our children, youth and adults.
A commitment
to interpersonal relationships and a sharing of faith is part
of this important ministry.
Responsibilities:
1.
Work with Christian Education Committee in designing, implementing and
evaluating Christian education programs for nursery through adult education.
2.
Along with Church School, to be responsible for youth groups, Vacation Bible
School and other special programming.
3.
Present to the Christian Education Committee (in the spring) a list of needed
teachers and youth leaders so it can secure volunteers.
4.
Work with the Christian Education Committee in choosing curriculum for children,
youth and adults.
5.
Order, maintain and coordinate the supplies, resources, equipment and curriculum
materials for the Christian education program.
6.
Work cooperatively with the Senior Minister in providing Sunday Children’s
Conversations.
7.
Will also have major responsibility for the confirmation instruction program.
This includes attending Confirmation Retreats.
8.
Practice Safe Sanctuary policies.
9.
Fill in for Pastor in Pastor’s absence.
10.
Share in the leadership and work of the boards and committees of the church with
those lay persons elected and/or appointed to serve.
Attend meetings, as necessary and appropriate, and serve as resource
person. Share professional
knowledge and experience to guide and enable lay ministries and assume a portion
of the administrative tasks. It is
anticipated that the Director of Christian Education will be a resource for
Membership Care, Music, and Mission Committees, in addition to the Board of
Christian Education.

Assist in developing and coordinating the supportive ministry of auxiliary
groups in the church (youth groups, fellowship groups, prayer groups, athletic
groups, etc.). Serve as a teacher
and resource person for these
groups, as called upon.
12.
Provide impartial and confidential pastoral care to our youth and young adults
(35 years and under).
13.
Strive for the unity of the church by acting as an agent of reconciliation for
any conflicts that might arise.
14.
Be responsible to be a participant in Association, Conference and denominational
programs and activities. Encourage
the congregation’s sense of identity with the United Church of Christ.
15.
Participate, as appropriate, in community and professional activities.
Participate in ecumenical activities and organizations that engender
cooperation between St. Paul’s Church and other faith communities – especially
in youth and educational programming.
16.
Attend weekly staff meetings.
17.
Work with Youth and Children’s Music Ministry Director.
18.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
1.
A minimum of one year’s experience in an education position.
2.
An ability to relate well and to teach and support teachers and youth leaders.
3.
An ability to relate well with children and parents and to demonstrate an
interest in the education of their children.
4.
An understanding of the growth and development of children and young adults.
5.
An ability to present and promote the Christian education program to the
congregation and community.
6.
A knowledge of or willingness to learn UCC practices, materials and theology.
7.
Would be committed to attend the UCC Lay Academy and move toward commissioning
or licenser.
Evaluation/Review:
This is to be conducted at least annually by the Personnel
Committee and the
Senior Pastor.
Conclusion:
This job description is to be viewed as flexible and open to change over
time.
It shall be reviewed at least annually in consultation with the Senior
Pastor and the Personnel
Committee. The Director of
Christian
Education should feel free to request such a review at such other times he/she
may deem appropriate.
